MEMPHIS — It wasn’t to be for the Memphis Tigers on the final Sunday of the regular season.
But it was close.
Jamal Shead hit a buzzer-beating jumper as #1 Houston held off the Tigers 67-65.
Shead’s dramatics coming only after Houston native Kendric Davis hit a lay-up to tie the game at 65 with less than nine seconds left. Kelvin Sampson didn’t call a timeout and Shead hit the game winner, silencing the sellout crowd at FedExForum.
Davis led all scorers with 26 points. Chandler Lawson was the only other Tiger to score in double figures with 10.
Shead and Tramon Mark led the Cougars with 16 each.
Memphis now falls to 0-11 all-time against #1 teams. Here’s hoping they get another shot at Houston in next weekend’s final of the AAC Tournament where Houston and Memphis go in as the top two seeds.
