ARLINGTON, Tenn. — Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies say 19-year-old Lucinda Luna’s boyfriend accidentally shot and killed her Thursday night in Arlington.

They say the gun used was a graduation present from the victim’s father.

“She was really funny,” said the victim’s friend Karalyn Stubblefield. “She was always smiling, giggling and happy. She was a good girl.”

Stubblefield was friends and neighbors with Luna.

“She was amazingly smart.”

What happened to Luna can only be described in one way:

“It’s just a tragedy,” said SCSO spokesperson Earle Farrell.

Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies say Luna’s 18-year-old boyfriend accidentally shot her in the stomach in Arlington Thursday night. It happened around 11:30 at Luna’s house on South Fork Drive.

Deputies say Luna later died while undergoing surgery at the hospital.

“I didn’t think it was real,” said Stubblefield. “I thought it was a joke or someone was messing with me. I didn’t believe it at all.”

Multiple witnesses told detectives Luna’s boyfriend was putting the gun away when it went off, striking Luna.

“All indications right now it seemed to be an accidental shooting,” said SCSO Chief Deputy Floyd Bonner.

Another heart wrenching detail: deputies say Luna’s father is the one who bought him the gun as a graduation present.

Shelby County Sheriff’s detectives say the victim’s father took her boyfriend to Bass Pro to pick out the gun for himself.

Deputies are now warning everyone to make sure gun safety is always at the top of their minds.

They say to always check the chamber to make sure it’s empty and verify anyone who has a gun in your family has gone through the appropriate training.

“One small mistake, one minute when you’re not thinking about gun safety, can cost somebody their life,” said Farrell.

At this point, Sheriff’s deputies say they don’t plan on charging the victim’s boyfriend with anything since it was accidental, which is why we are also not releasing his name.
