MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A nurse from West Tennessee was one of the victims of the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas, multiple sources have confirmed.
Sonny Melton was a resident of Big Sandy, near Paris, Tennessee, according to a Facebook post from Union University, where he graduated in 2015.
Melton was attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a country music concert, with his wife, Heather Gulish Melton.
Melton reportedly was gunned down while protecting his wife from the bullets.
His cousin Kelley Brewer found out what happened hours later.
"When the shooting started, he grabbed her and ran," said Brewer. "He was pushing her. She felt him hit her when he was shot in the back."
Melton was 29 years old.
The concert was attended by more than 22,000 people. Of those, 50 are confirmed dead and more than 400 are reported injured in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.
Melton's Facebook page says he was as a registered nurse at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital up until last year. Henry County Medical Center in Paris issued a release stating that the couple were both employees of that facility.
Heather Melton, an orthopaedic surgeon at Henry County Medical Center, survived the shooting.
"God had a plan for him. It's unfortunate he didn't get to live out his long life. Just taken at 29 years old," said Brewer.
