MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman says she and her two little dogs were mauled by a vicious dog on a morning walk near Shelby Farms.
It happened near Thrushcross Monday morning.
“We were walking down the street. We normally do this every day,” said Joyce Freeland. “All of a sudden this pit bull comes out and starts going mainly after Bailey.”
The dog bit her little shih tzu then went after her and her Maltese.
“I was trying to get them up in my arms to hold them and get them away from him,” she said. “I just feel like I just can’t protect them. There was no way I could protect them.”
Freeland felt defeated as the dog’s teeth clamped down. She screamed for help.
Seconds later, she saw a black SUV turn the corner. A stranger jumped out of the car and grabbed a metal tool and saved her life.
“There was blood all over my clothes and everything, and Bailey was barely breathing,” she said.
The stranger scared the dog away while the paramedics took her to the hospital. She now has a broken arm.
As for her dogs, the shih tzu died at the vet. The Maltese is expected to survive.
The dog that attacked hasn’t been found.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to walk the dogs again in the neighborhood. I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable doing it,” said Freeland.
Freeland said no doubt, things could have been a lot worse. She won’t call it a miracle. Instead, she credits that brave stranger.
“He was my guardian angel. He really was,” she said.
Freeland never got the stranger’s full name but wants him to know how much she appreciates his help.
Animal Control said they are looking for the vicious dog and had officers in the neighborhood Thursday.
