MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are searching for suspects after two men were shot to death at an Orange Mound apartment complex Wednesday night.

Police say it happened around 9 p.m. outside the apartments on Pendleton Street off Ketchum Road.

Neighbors tell WREG the victims were just hanging out when someone drove by shooting.

“I heard about 50 gunshots,” Lee Patterson said.

Another neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, says she was sleeping when she heard the gunfire and stepped outside to see her neighbor lying on the ground.

“He was just out there and they came through blazing,” she said. “He was a good guy. He don’t deserve this. He didn’t do anything to nobody.”

Neighbors say both victims lived in the apartments, and at least one had several children.

“They was hard-working people and they didn’t bother nobody. They were just, last night, being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Patterson said.

Police say the men were taken to the hospital in critical condition just before 9:30 p.m., but less than an hour later, they were both dead.

“It’s just sad. I knew him personally being the neighbor upstairs, but he didn’t do nothing to nobody. Nobody at all,” the woman said.

While family was too upset to talk, neighbors tell WREG they hear gunshots almost every night and feel like they’re being ignored.

“I just want the crime to stop,” Patterson said.

“We need more security. We need more police officers,” the woman said. “We don’t need you to just pass by here, need the police officers to interact with us, with the people in Memphis to make this a safer place for Memphis for the kids.”

On Oct. 11, police identified the victims as Marcus Brooks, 31, and Marqual Rivers, 28.

This is an ongoing homicide investigation.
