BYHALIA, Miss. — Bullets were flying in Byhalia not too far from a school. According to police, a man was gunned down Sunday morning in his driveway.

"I just heard gunshots, I didn’t see anything else, I just saw him laying on the ground," said Neka Wheeler.

Children’s laughter silenced by violence. The victim was 42-year-old Bradley Rankin.

"I was sorry his mother had to come out of church and see this, I was so sorry," said neighbor Barbara Brunson.

A mother’s day interrupted by tragedy. Brunson says she lives in the apartment complex next door, and instead of celebrating today’s holiday, she cancelled her plans to support Rankin’s family.

"We were going out to eat dinner and we heard about it and we rushed on back home," added Brunson.

Brunson says she remembers a time Rankin extended a kind gesture to her relative, and with that in mind her heart goes out to the family.

"Very nice person to me, a good person. My grandson went over there the other day and he gave him a watch," said Brunson.

She says peace is the best Mother’s day present the triggerman could give the family.

"I hope they catch the person who did it," said Brunson.

According to the family, at last check Rankin was undergoing surgery but expected to be OK.
