SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Deputies say they have a person of interest in a deadly shooting Thursday morning in southeast Shelby County.
Police identified the victim as Gregory Davis, 30.
Investigators say the shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. at the victim's mother's home on Beach Shore Cove. It's unclear whether Davis also lived there.
Deputies said Davis was taken to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Around 11 a.m., they announced that he had died.
“You just don’t expect that, you know?" neighbor Russell Taylor said. “It’s just disheartening, you know, when it’s in your neighborhood. You see it on the news so much, and then you just see it actually right next door almost.”
Deputies don’t know what led to the shooting, but say they have no reason to believe neighbors should be concerned for their safety.
“Right now there’s no indications that this was a random act," Capt. Anthony Buckner, with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, said. "However, we will have deputies patrolling throughout this neighborhood today and in the coming days.”
Investigators focused on an SUV parked outside the home, spending about five hours scouring the scene for shell casings and other evidence, and hoping neighbors caught something on camera.
“It’s so important for the people who do live in this community – if they review their home surveillance footage and if they do see something that could be of interest to us, we ask that they give us a call," Capt. Buckner said.
Until some of the questions surrounding the crime are answered and a suspect is in jail, people in the neighborhood will likely be a little uneasy.
“Just hope it don’t happen to do is all you can do," Taylor said. "Hope and pray that it doesn’t happen to you.”
Investigators aren’t naming the person of interest or saying how he or she may have known the victim.
