MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police launched an investigation after a man was shot at a Whitehaven gas station overnight, marking the second gas station shooting in the city in a little over 24 hours.
Police are still searching for suspects in the latest shooting, which happened around 2 a.m. Thursday at the Mapco on East Brooks Road.
Customers tell WREG they’ve watched the violence in that area get worse and worse over the years.
“This area’s pretty bad, but there’s a lot of bad areas in Memphis. Sadly to say, but that’s the truth,” said Rodney Leist.
Police say the man was shot after an argument as he walked one of his friends to their car, but they haven’t named a suspect or released a description.
Leist has worked at an industrial park nearby for 30 years, and says he’s fed up with the constant crime in the neighborhood he once called home.
“Oh yea, it’s gotten worse,” he said. “I work right over here, so all this violence around here, I don’t like it. I grew up in Whitehaven, went to Whitehaven High School.”
Wednesday night, another man was shot at a Marathon gas station on South Third Street in South Memphis.
“Can’t even walk the streets that much ’cause somebody’s gonna get shot somewhere. We don’t know what’s going on,” one customer, who didn’t want to be identified, said.
“Scary and sad. It’s everywhere in Memphis now,” he said.
But police say the man in that case was trying to steal a car when the owner opened fire. He was shot in the head, but is expected to survive.
Like most people in the city, Leist says he doesn’t know what the solution is.
“They can hire as many policeman as they want, and I don’t know if that’s gonna stop it,” he said.
But one thing he does know is that he refuses to live his life in fear.
“I’m not that worried, no,” he said.
The victim in Thursday’s shooting is in critical condition in the hospital, according to investigators.
Police say the suspect was in a dark-colored, four-door car, but they don’t know specifics.
