(Fayette County, TN) A skydiver who disappeared during a jump Monday was found dead later in the day.

The man, 56-year-old Randall Mathews of Perris, Cali., disappeared after jumping from a plane at about noon with six others.

Just before sunset, a search team in a helicopter spotted him and sent in a ground crew, who found him in a very remote wooded area.

He was still wearing his oxygen mask and it appears the parachute came out of the backpack, but did not fully deploy.

At this time, it is unclear if the parachute started to deploy but had a problem during the descent, or if it came out upon impact.

Investigators have not ruled out a medical issue. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Mathews was taking part in a high altitude – low opening, or HALO, jump.

His girlfriend stayed on the ground to wait for the group.

The plane was at an altitude of 30,000 feet when the jump took place.
