MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man accused of trying to rob an Orange Mound clothing store died Tuesday night.

Police said an employee shot him when he barged in flashing a gun and demanding money at Extreme Gear in the 2200 block of Lamar.

The suspect is in critical condition.

"Everybody up here knows everybody," said Charlene Granbberry who lives near the crime scene. "All this going on. Look at our officers. Look at everybody. This is pitiful!"

Police blocked off most of the parking lot, collected evidence and spoke to witnesses for several hours.

"For you to come out here and try to take something from somebody? No! They aren't going to let you take it! No, folks aren't going to let you take their stuff from them," said Granbberry.

Police have yet to say who the suspect is and what he was after.

No charges have been filed as of Tuesday night.
