MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Police are on the hunt for a suspected shooter that sent a man to the hospital.

The shooting happened at the Hillview Village Apartments off Alcy and Hillview.

Police say the man was shot while driving his car through the complex. A passenger sitting in the backseat jumped out the car and ran off.
Police haven’t said if they believe that the passenger is the shooting suspect.

“I just don`t feel safe,” said Marcus Woods. Woods lives feet away from where police say a bullet pierced through a 24-year-old man`s back.

Neighbors here at the Hillview Village apartments say Saturday evening, the sound of several gunshots forced several children playing outside to scatter and duck for safety.

“I can’t stop it. I hope they can as many guns off the streets as possible,” said Latonya Bell.

Bell is thankful her children and grandchildren were not playing in the immediate shooting area. She says there’s so much violence in the South Memphis complex, she`s numb to it. But Bell prays every day that her children and grandchildren are safe.

“What is that prayer?” asked WREG’s Elise Preston.

“That we come out in one piece and go in one piece like we came out. Just getting ready for the next day,” replied Bell.

Hillview Village is the same complex where five teens were shot this summer while standing outside. The youngest victim of that shooting is just 12-years-old.

“There`s a lot of things going on; it just doesn`t make no sense,” said Woods.

Woods says Saturday night’s shooter doesn’t live here at Hillview. He`s hoping police will help keep crooks out of his complex, so families can stay a little safer.

“Police be over here every now and then- they need to be over here regular, stop the crime,” said Woods.

The investigation is ongoing.
