HELENA- WEST HELENA, Ark. — Several people are facing serious charges in connection to a rape case in Helena-West Helena.

The Helena-West Helena police chief said it’s the biggest case of its kind he’s seen in the small Arkansas town. He said up to eight people could be arrested for charges including rapes and prostitution of a 14-year-old girl.

“It’s very alarming,” said Chief Virgil Green. “This is a serious investigation where a lot of people had knowledge but failed to protect this child and report it.”

The allegations were brought forward by an anonymous tipster who called the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline saying the girl has been having a sexual relationship with a 29-year-old man for the last year.

The whole time members of the girl’s family and even the suspect’s wife knew about it.

Green said the teen would sleep at the man’s home in his bed, while his wife slept on the couch.

Investigators are also looking into how the man was allowed to pick her up from school.

Officers said it even looks like the man bought the girl’s mom a car.

The victim reportedly denied any sexual relationship.

Now, Green says he’s also troubled by how often he sees this happening with girls.

“We’ve had over 25 sex assault cases our investigators worked in last 12 to 18 months.”

“If these things are occurring you need to report to local police. These girls are victims of crimes and the long-term effect they have is lifetime,” he added.

At this time, they are not being identified to protect the victim’s identity.
