MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are looking for a man they say spent his Thanksgiving evening breaking into Sam’s Club on Covington Pike. The suspect got away with $12,800 worth of cigarettes.

“It’s real sad,” said Tony Craig who shops at the Sam’s Club. “It’s very sad. It’s the way society is now, though. I mean people get callous to it.”

Officers responded to the alarm going off at the business around 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving, but by the time they got there, they were only met with shattered glass.

Police say the suspect smashed both the inside and outside glass exit doors. They say he went inside and stole eight cases of Newport cigarettes.

“It’s really not that surprising,” said Donald Woods who shops in Memphis. “People are doing any and everything they can to obtain money and basically don’t want to work.”

Last month, police arrested two men in connection to two separate hits of cigarette thefts in Memphis. Over 200 cartons were stolen, worth more than $11,000.

Those suspects targeted truck drivers, while the Sam’s Club suspect went in after-hours — during the time many were enjoying the holiday.

“So much for Thanksgiving, right?” said Craig.

Now police are hoping they can find the person responsible for the theft. Some of the crime’s reported were caught on video, but the suspect was wearing a mask.

Shoppers say they won’t let other’s poor decisions ruin their holiday.

“I’m not going to live in fear,” said Woods. “I just choose not to live in fear, so I don’t feel unsafe. I’m aware things can happen and I’m aware of my surroundings, but I don’t feel unsafe.”

The suspect was seen leaving in a possible 4-door black Chevy Cruz. If you have any information that could help lead to an arrest, you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
