MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was shot during a robbery-attempt early Thursday morning at the Shell gas station at the intersection of Germantown and Cordova roads.

The man was left fighting for his life, although police reported Thursday evening that he had been upgraded to non-critical condition.

"I'm just now walking across the street. I could've got robbed myself," said Malcolm Johnson , who said he lives across the street and noticed the commotion at the gas station.

The first thing on his mind was his children.

"I got two, a five-year-old and a three-year-old. And they do stay with me. So, that's kind of scary."

Johnson said he's lived in the area for about eight years and has seen crime steadily increase.

Some customers we spoke to said this is another reason to remember to always be aware of your surroundings.

"You have to be careful and protect yourself because people are desperate."

Police told WREG the suspects were in a four-door green truck that had a toolbox in the back and no tailgate.  If you have any information contact Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
