Memphis ties record of 213 homicides

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are investigating a pair of  murders in two Memphis neighborhoods.

These murders mean the city has tied its record of 213 homicides set in 1993.

The first shooting happened around 3:15 a.m. Friday in the 3100 block of Monterrey Square in the Messick-Buntyn neighborhood near the University of Memphis.

Police say they found a 24-year-old woman with gunshot wounds lying on the floor inside a duplex.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second shooting happened around 3:45 a.m. in the 1800 block of Benford St. in South Memphis.

Family members say 59-year-old Jarvis Hines was killed in that shooting.

He was found inside his truck.

So far, police haven’t released any information about suspects in either case.
