MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are investigating the forcible sodomy and robbery of a woman in downtown Memphis.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
Police said the victim was walking down Floyd Alley, which is near 4th Street and Monroe, between AutoZone Park and the YMCA, when she was attacked.
The woman told police she was sodomized and then robbed. The suspect reportedly took her purse carrying cash, credit cards and her phone.
There is no description of the suspect.
“I frequently actually walk through the alley to school every morning. Besides the random homeless people who walk in and out of it, I haven’t really seen that much,” said Jesse Ugstad who lives nearby. “As the job of a police department, it would be to inform the public who are just like that out here. It’s scary.”
Downtown Memphis Commission President Terence Patterson said this news is gut-wrenching.
In a statement, he said, “We work closely, daily, with private security and MPD to ensure that Downtown Memphis is a safe environment for all at all times.”
