MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A driver was charged after allegedly hitting a woman and a young child before fleeing the scene.

The incident happened late Sunday evening near Stage Avenue and North Thomas Road.

Darneshia Blakes says she waited for the red light to cross at North Thomas when she and her 3-year-old were hit by a speeding car.

"I pushed my baby. He was going so fast, about 80 or 90 miles per hour. He hit me. Another car came by and hit me," Blakes said.

According to police, Gregory Williams was heading northbound when he suddenly veered out of the lane and hit Blakes and her toddler, Kylie Grant, with the left side of his vehicle. The 44-year-old didn't stop until a witness tracked him down and made him return to the scene.

"We saw people standing in the street, and then my husband spotted the baby. So we swerved to keep from hitting the baby," a motorist said.

The woman, who didn't want to be identified, says her husband ran to the little girl and called 911.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, but sadly the child didn't make it.

She says the driver in the car in front of them also stopped to help and an undercover officer showed up and gave the toddler CPR.

"My heart went out to the baby. I think that is the reason everybody stopped, because we saw the baby in the street," she said.

From their West Memphis, Arkansas home family members told us they didn't understand why Blakes was released from the hospital so soon, and they're having a hard time getting information about where Kylie's body is now.

"I don't know what funeral home she is at or nothing," a family member said.

They are happy an arrest has been made and say they just want justice for little Kylie.

Williams has been charged with reckless homicide, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident involving death, violation of financial law, driving with a suspended license and improper lane changing.
