MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police have arrested a man they believe used social media to meet up with young women then rob and assault them.

Terry Coley, 22, was taken into custody late Monday night and charged with aggravated rape, aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping.

There were multiple victims, all of whom are Memphis residents ages 18 to 24. Coley is accused of luring at least two of the women by talking to them on social media and then planning to meet.

Arrest reports accused Coley of luring one victim through Instagram and another through Facebook.

Police said he agreed to meet up with the two women after talking online. He reportedly said his cousin would drive them. Instead, police said Coley picked them up himself.

Investigators said he robbed them and sexually assaulted one of them. Both incidents happened in Northeast Memphis.

In another case, police said he forced a woman and her two-year-old child in his car at gun point in Orange Mound. Investigators said he robbed and sexually assaulted the woman, with her daughter in the car.

MPD said its Sex Crimes Bureau found Coley near Sycamore View and Pleasant View Monday.

He will appear in court Wednesday.

WREG talked with the Family Safety Center's Director of Communications and Development Jordan Howard about ways to safely meet up with someone you met online.

Howard said she met her husband on an online dating site.

"We met in a well-lit, public place, a restaurant," Howard said.

Howard said it is important for people to research who they plan to meet. She said to provide your own transportation and meet in a public place.

"I tell people these tips, so they can protect themselves, not because if you don't do these things, it's your fault if something happens, because it's absolutely always the attacker's fault," Howard said.
