MEMPHIS, Tenn. —One person was killed and another injured in a midday Monday shooting in a Highland Heights neighborhood.
Police responded to the 3000 block of Pershing around 11:30 a.m. They found two male victims with gunshot wounds.
One was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. The other was taken to Regional One in critical condition.
Friends of the deceased were angry police wouldn't let more people through the crime scene tape.
"My heart went out to her, because she doesn't know what happened. She was probably at home somewhere," James Dillard said. "It just hurt me man. I got six grandboys, you know what I'm saying?"
He's lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and says its gotten increasingly violent in the last 20.
"I sit out here sometimes. You hear shots all the time, 'Boom, boom, boom, boom."
Dillard says the problem is young men shooting instead of talking.
"A lot of them can't walk away from nothing. They feel they are cowards."
He says there's only one way to fix it.
"It starts in the home."
