MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A family is safe and sound this evening thanks to the quick actions of one of their neighbors.

"It was one of the worst things that ever happened."

WREG was there as Alex Walker stood watch as plumes of smoke blanketed the sky above his Fox Meadows home Thursday morning.

He and his sister were inside asleep around 7:30 a.m. when a neighbor's knock woke them up. The neighbor warned the two their home's garage was one fire and the flames were spreading quickly.

"I go outside and I see flames everywhere. Over my home, everywhere."

Fire crews were on the scene within minutes and it only took them 12 to bring the fire under control.

"There is severe damage to the garage, but we were able to contain it to the garage and to the exterior of the structure," said Lt. Wayne Cooke with the Memphis Fire Department.

Despite the damage, Walker said his thoughts are with a higher power.

"It doesn`t do anything, but make you closer to God," he said.  "Just lets you know that God is real. If he can get you through this, he can get you through anything."
