MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is facing charges for trying to pick up what he thought was a prostitute.

Turns out, she was an undercover cop.

Shartavius Turnage was slapped in handcuffs Wednesday night at the corner of Lester and Summer.

When police searched his car, they say they found several Mason jars full of marijuana, cocaine, more than $6,000 in cash and a stolen gun.

They said the Vice team and uniform patrol work together daily, but wouldn’t get into details.

Some folks said they’ve noticed their efforts.

“I’ve noticed a lot. All of a sudden there will be police cars just like that, and I’m like, ‘Oh good, thank you.'”

A lot of business owners along Summer and Lester didn’t want to go on camera, but did tell WREG there is a problem.

According to MPD’s Cyberwatch, there have been 15 reports of prostitution within in a mile radius of Lester and Summer.

Turnage is facing a list of drug and weapon charges.

He’s out on a $30,000 bond.

No one with the Summer Avenue Merchants Association was available to speak with us, but did say they are working with MPD to improve the area.
