MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A Memphis mother and her 3-year-old child were rushed to the hospital after being shot early Saturday morning in the 1700 block of Pendleton.
"Pow, pow, pow real loud," Jothea Brown described gun shots. "We just heard gun shots last night and found out that the next door neighbor right over here got shot."
Police said the mother and her boyfriend were getting out of the car with her three children when two men walked up to them.
"These folks just moved in yesterday," a neighbor said through a cracked apartment door.
It was close to 2:00 a.m. in the morning at Pendleton Place Apartments when the incident happened.
Both suspects began shooting at the family with a pistol and a shotgun, according to police.
The woman was shot, and the toddler was grazed by the bullets.
Both of the victims were rushed to the hospital in critical condition but have since been upgraded to non-critical condition.
"It's just bad especially in out neighborhood," Brown explained. "It makes it unsafe for our kids....It made me feel like is my kids safe over here? Do I need to move? Do I need to stay? Do they need better security cameras or whatever over her."
Police report finding the shotgun used in the assault, but the bad guys who used the guns are still on the run.
"I mean it was a child that was involved," Brown exclaimed. "Do they even care?"
Police said the shooting is an ongoing investigation and ask anyone with information to give them a call.
