MEMPHIS, Tenn. — COVID-19 was either a direct or contributing factor in the death of a 13-year-old child this week, Shelby County Health Department Director Alisa Haushalter said Tuesday.

No other details about the pediatric death were given during the regular coronavirus status update by health and local government officials.

The announcement came on the same day the health department reported zero new deaths from COVID-19, although three deaths were reported Monday and four on Sunday. Haushalter did not specify which day this week the child’s death had occurred.

The median age of death is 73, Haushalter said. The mortality rate for patients locally is 1.4%, she said.

A total of 366 people in Shelby County have died, the health department reported Tuesday. The total number of cases Tuesday was 26,528, an increase of 122 from the day before.
