(Memphis) A Memphis police officer was shot in the 4000 block of Berkshire Avenue around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Officer Calvin Taylor, 45, was hit twice in the leg.

The officer's condition is non-critical at The MED.

Our crew described the officer as being awake and alert when he arrived at the hospital.

According to Police Director Toney Armstrong, "He's upbeat, never lost consciousness. He is upbeat."

Armstrong said the officer was assisting in a search warrant when two pit bulls started to attack.

Armstrong said the officer who was shot was outside the house when officers inside the home began shooting at the dogs.

It appears the officer may have been hit by one of the bullets fired by a fellow officer but investigators are still working to confirm that.

Director Armstrong said this incident shows all police work is dangerous, "At the end of the day you never know what you are going to face on the other side of that door."

Two people have been taken into custody at the shooting location where the Organized Crime Unit was working at the time of the shooting.
