Memorial Day events were held Monday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Events were held this Memorial Day to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our country.

A Memorial Day service started at 11 a.m. at the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery at 4000 Forest Hill Irene Road.

Organizers say there was a big crowd.

There was another service at Memorial Park Cemetery on Poplar at 11 a.m.

That ceremony featured a cannon salute.

Memorial Day was started as a way to remember the more than 620,000 people who died in Civil War.

The first official Memorial Day observance took place in 1866.
