WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — A man was rushed to a Memphis hospital after being shot multiple times outside a West Memphis apartment complex, police said.

The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Friday outside the Westwood Apartments in the 600 block of South Avalon.

“I heard something earlier today that sounded like a firework so I just figured it was a firework,” said Blake Sims.

West Memphis police say the victim is in critical condition, but that his injuries are not life-threatening.

People living in the area said this is just the latest in a string of violent episodes.

“There’s always something going down,” said Terry Cooper.

“Begin to be an ongoing thing and there’s some crime going on all the time down through here,” said Sims, who showed WREG a gun he carries for his protection.

Police made their presence known following Friday’s shooting, patrolling the streets and stationing themselves at key points along South Avalon. But some are still uneasy.

“I’ve lived here going on almost two years now and I’m scared for my life every time I go out that door sometimes,” said Cooper, who moved to West Memphis from Hot Springs.

“I wish I’d never moved here. It scares me living here,” he added.

Police don’t yet have a suspect description but are asking people with information to call Crittenden County Crimestoppers at 870-732-4444.
