MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was sentenced Tuesday to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to the attempted first-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend.
The victim, Monique Smith, now 27, was on her way to Halle Stadium in September 2013 to meet her sister, who was at a candlelight vigil for a Ridgeway student who died, according to the DA’s Office.
Investigators said Vernon Walton, now 33, followed her into the parking lot and shot into her car, hitting her. He continued to shoot her as she tried to escape.
She was shot multiple times and was left with 14 entrance and exit wounds, according to the DA’s Office.
According to the DA’s Office, Smith had filed for an order of protection against Walton earlier that day.
Walton ran away from the scene of the shooting, but police and security officers shortly captured him and found a gun.
Smith spent a month in the hospital but survived. She continues to receive treatment for her injuries, which include two bullets still in her body.
