MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was killed in a shooting in North Memphis Saturday morning, police said.

Investigators say the man, whose name hasn’t been released, was found at the corner of North Hubert and Springdale around 7 a.m. with a gunshot wound.

He died at the hospital.

“It’s very sad. I wake up to the news that someone’s been murdered right around the corner from me,” neighbor and community activist Darrell Wright said.

There are still few details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but sources tell WREG the man was walking down the street when someone came up to him and opened fire.

It’s unclear if the shooter was driving or walking, and police haven’t released a possible motive.

“I’m tired of seeing it – the violence. We got to find ways to settle our differences without the guns,” Wright said. “Summer hasn’t even gotten here yet, and look what’s going on.”

Wright has spent his entire life in the neighborhood.

“This is a faith-based community. This community has churches on every corner,” he said.

He believes much of the crime in the area stems from economic disparities among the people who live there.

“Burglaries, shoplifting and stuff like that, that stems from the economic drought,” he said. “All the blight, all the businesses that close up. We don’t even have a grocery store in this community. We have to go out, leave this community just to go get something to eat, to get groceries for our family.”

As he sees another homicide in his lifelong neighborhood, Wright’s prayer is for the people who also call it home to step up and help make a change.

“Elders and the people who have roots in this community really need to come together and raise our young ones and let them know about our history and how deep and how rich it is – our history is – so we can love one another and stop this foolish killing,” he said.

Investigators haven’t released any information about the victim or a possible suspect description.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
