MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A heated argument turned deadly in Hickory Hill late Friday night, Memphis police said.

Officers responded to a shooting call around 10:30 in the 6900 block of Stone Ridge near Riverdale. That’s the Germantown Falls Apartments.

They found Pierre Cheers on the floor with a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead.

Justin Mays, 21, was taken into custody on the scene and charged with murder in perpetration of a felony and aggravated kidnapping.

A neighbor says it all started with an argument between the two men and Cheer’s girlfriend.

“I saw him lying down. I saw him take his last breaths,” said the man, who did not want to be identified, at the scene.

“Had my window raised then out of nowhere you hear faint arguing and then, just the gunshot … I looked out the window as anyone else would do. Like what is that, it sounded like a firecracker.”

He said the loud single pop was followed by screams he couldn’t ignore. That’s when he says he found a woman who identified herself as Cheer’s girlfriend, hysterical, standing at the top of the staircase.

“‘My baby daddy has just been shot, he just killed my baby daddy!’ you hear her on the phone with the operator.”

Witnesses say Mays didn’t try to leave the scene. He stuck around until police arrived.
