MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A Memphis man is charged with taking his daughter from her Cordova home overnight.

Llewlyn Stewart, 40, was taken into custody around 4 a.m. Wednesday in Tunica County.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, the girl was taken from a home in the 1100 block of Mossy Knoll Drive around 1 a.m. by her non-custodial father.

"They did have reason to believe [she was in danger]. He had a violent past and made threats."

"They did have reason to believe [she was in danger]. He had a violent past and made threats," authorities told WREG's Michael Quander.

An 11-year-old boy at the home reportedly tried to fight off Stewart, but was assaulted by the suspect for his efforts.

The Tunica County Sheriff's Department reports the two were found in the Hollywood Casino in Tunica where the child's mother said he's been staying.

Neighbors said the entire thing is hard to believe. They said the family just moved here from out of town two months ago, and they've never noticed anything shady going on.

"We've never seen any incidents -- domestic violence, fights," one neighbor said.

Stewart is now charged with kidnapping and simple assault. He's currently awaiting extradition from Tunica County.
