MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police have identified a man who was found dead overnight Tuesday.

Police say 22-year-old Kodie Lewis was found with an apparent gunshot wound at 1:26 a.m. on Pendleton Street.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released any suspect information at this time.

We spoke to Lewis’ mother who says he was killed on his birthday. One of the final posts from Kodie Lewis on Facebook shows love, writing “Thanks for all the Happy Birthday wishes. Thanks and I love you all.”

A relative posted on social media that Lewis had been found dead in an abandoned apartment complex. So far, police have not confirmed that information.

Loved ones described Lewis as a “gentle giant” and “everyone’s friend” who didn’t deserve this.

The entertainment director at DRU’s Place, a midtown bar that often hosts drag and other shows, shared with us their hurt following the loss as Lewis had been a performer there, saying:

“It’s devastating to Kodie’s family and their found family and friends that we won’t be able to see where Kodie would have gone in this world and what they would have done. They were a newly lit candle that was extinguished much too soon by the selfish choices of another human being.”

A GoFundMe was created on behalf of Lewis’ family to help cover funeral costs. If you would like to contribute, click here.
