► Update: Report names victim in fatal wreck involving state lawmaker

Status Update: In a Saturday morning Facebook post, representatives posted for Gant and said that he has undergone two successful surgeries on his right and left arm as well as his shattered left hip. CAT scans show no brain swelling or trauma at this time and he is not at risk of internal bleeding. Rep. Gant is grateful to the ICU staff and still recovering.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG)– Tennessee State Representative Ron Gant was injured in a car wreck in Hardeman County Wednesday evening.

According to the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office, the two-vehicle accident happened on Highway 18 south at 6 p.m. One car reportedly crossed a lane of traffic and struck the other.

One driver was pronounced dead. That driver has not been identified at this time.

The sheriff’s office said Rep. Gant was airlifted to Regional One in Memphis. He is reportedly in stable but serious condition.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. While THP could not say whether anyone was driving under the influence at the time of the crash, they did say they will be seeking blood tests and an autopsy.

Gant, a Republican, represents District 94 covering Fayette, McNairy, and part of Hardeman County.

“He’s, you know, one that has been pragmatic and thoughtful, and considerate of your opinion, even though we may not agree on everything, he will listen,” said State Rep. Karen Camper of Memphis. “He’ll try to understand, and I think I have the same respect for them on the other side.”

Lawmakers are reacting to the news on social media.

“Maria and I are lifting Ron Gant and his family up in prayer during this time of recovery and healing,” Gov. Bill Lee tweeted Thursday morning.

Senator Marsha Blackburn said in a Facebook post, “Please join me in praying for my friend, State Representative Ron M. Gant, who was in a serious car accident tonight. May God bring quick healing to Ron and comfort to his loved ones.”

Senator London Lamar responded on Twitter saying, “Sending prayers to my friend @RonGant!!!!!”

Cameron Sexton, Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives, also responded to the crash on Twitter, writing in part, “We are thankful for all the emergency personnel, physicians, and nurses who provided amazing care and comfort to him and his family.”

Camper of Memphis is also sending Gant well wishes.

“We’re keeping him in our thoughts and prayers,” Camper said.

The family of the person killed in the crash has lashed out on social media, saying they are the ones grieving.

“I immediately kind of went into prayer for the families of everybody concerned, because it’s a traumatic experience, and it’s something that you’re going to have to live with for the rest of your life on both sides,” Camper said.
