MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person is dead after a shooting downtown Wednesday night.
Police say officers responded to the shooting in the 300 block of Poplar Avenue, near the Shelby County Jail, at 9:49 p.m. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
WREG talked to the victim’s female cousin, who wanted us to know more about him. “He’s the peace; he’s the problem-solver; he’s the one that knows it ain’t worth it,” she said.
She also told us he was a father. “He was a father of nine. He was a father of nine, who was with his daughter for her birthday.”
Shortly after that celebration, he was gunned down, dying on the day his 12-year-old daughter was born.
His cousin says it will take some time, years possibly, to heal from a hurt she’s never felt before. “It’ll never stop. We have to remember his peace, his joy, his love ” she said.
Police say the male suspect fled north on Danny Thomas.
