MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A retired jail lieutenant was killed in a motorcycle accident while escorting a funeral procession Thursday on Highway 385.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as James Hanson, 56, of Memphis. Hanson retired from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office in 2016 after more than 25 years of service.

The sheriff’s office said the accident happened at 12:30, on a stretch of the highway east of Hacks Cross Road.

Hanson was taken the Methodist Hospital Germantown in critical condition. The sheriff’s office reported about an hour later that he was pronounced dead.

There was no word on what caused the accident or whether any other drivers were involved.
