MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in critical condition after he was shot in the chest in Downtown Memphis Saturday night, Memphis Police say.
Police say the shooting happened near 508 South Main Street a few minutes after 11 p.m. A victim was located outside and was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.
Police reports say the man, who was not identified, was shot in the chest. Witnesses told police they say a man holding a handgun walk across Main Street, then heard several shots fired.
Other witnesses said they saw a man and two women fleeing the scene in a black four-door Infiniti driving south on Main.
People staying in the area say they heard multiple shots.
Bullet holes riddled the front windows of Feelin Memphis Gift Shop and Downtown Yoga Memphis. At least two nearby vehicles were also covered with bullet holes.
“We just heard more of them, and then it stopped and then we heard more, and then it sounded like the cops came,” said a woman in the area. “At first, it sounded like it wasn’t real. And then we realized, no that’s definitely real.”
Mark Akin, owner of Downtown Yoga, says he’s estimating roughly $5,000 worth of damage to his studio.
“You can’t blame the cops. The cops can’t be everywhere at once. You can’t blame the mayor. You can’t blame anybody. It’s just people acting like lunatics,” said Akin.
Akin says he’s not going to allow this setback to hold him back.
“The lifeblood of downtown, a lot of it, is small businesses,” said Akin. “We do have an important impact on the economic prosperity down here. So, we just got to keep going man,”
There is no suspect information available at this time. Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
