MEMPHIS, Tenn.– A man is in the hospital after a shooting in the airport area Wednesday.

Memphis Police responded to shots fired at the Valero Gas Station on the 3700 block of East Shelby Drive near Getwell.

According to Memphis police, the man was shot after getting into an argument with two other men Wednesday evening. Police reports say a witness told police the argument was a debt.

The victim was transported to Regional One in critical condition.

This incident is one of the many violent crimes plaguing the city. Jammie Baker, who works nearby says there’s nothing to do to stop it.

“It’s going to happen. All we can do is try to minimize it,” Baker said.

However, local resident Cindy Taylor disagrees and believes more can be done.

“They think ‘Oh, we need more police on the street.’ But you have to counterpart that. With more police, what are you going to do? We need programs,” Taylor said.

Community leaders say they are listening to the community when it comes to finding solutions to curb crime, but they say it’s no simple fix.

“We’re making progress in some areas but there’s no one answer. There’s no one agency that can fix it all. There’s no one solution that can fix it all. It takes everybody,” Shelby County District Attorney Amy Wierich says.

Police say the suspect fled the scene in a black Nissan SUV.

However, they might be identified soon due to the gunmen dropping a business card at the scene, police say.
