MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A boy, 7, accidentally shot his older brother at home in the 2900 block of Clearbrook Street in Parkway Village Saturday afternoon, Memphis Police said.
WREG was originally told that the child was taken to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition where he died, but we have since learned that’s not the case. According to police, the child was already dead when officers arrived on the scene just after 3 p.m.
MPD spokesperson Louis Brownlee told WREG a child, either 9 or 10 years old, was shot by his younger brother.
“There’s three. I see them when they come home from school. When school was in, I saw them all the time,” neighbor Kenneth Wilkins said. “It’s heartbreaking. It really is.”
Another neighbor told us she saw paramedics roll the boy out on a stretcher. He looked “lifeless.”
She described a hectic situation outside the house involving children and adults, many she’s seen before, but like her other neighbor she doesn’t know their names or how they’re all related.
A distraught man was also seen coming out of the house. He was detained and questioned by police.
Records show police visited the home on May 4 and made an arrest for disorderly conduct.
Authorities don’t know how the child got hold of the gun. They’re investigating the incident as an accident.
