UPDATE: The Mississippi Department of Public Safety on Tuesday identified the person shot in this case as Ronnie Lee Martin, of Kentucky.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Authorities in Mississippi are investigating after a fatal officer-involved shooting in Senatobia on Sunday.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the shooting happened at 4:30 p.m. on Highway 51 and Gilmore Street in Senatobia, MS.

The MBI said this incident involved the Senatobia Police Department and the Hernando Department, but they are still gathering evidence.

Sources tell WREG a person committed a crime in another city and police pursued them. Once they got to Senatobia, the suspect’s SUV collided with a vehicle at Highway 51 and Main Street before crashing several blocks south.

That’s where he then abandoned his SUV and shots were fired.

According to MBI, negotiators tried to talk the armed suspect down, but they were unsuccessful and lethal force was used. The suspect was shot and killed.

No officers were injured.

The crime scene tied up traffic on Highway 51 for several hours.

The shooting happened feet away from where witness Betty Spooner was standing.

“The gunshots went off. It sounded so close and so loud it took me a while after I got back inside to get chill bumps gone and kind of calm down,” Spooner said. “I’m so glad that it wasn’t worse because lately, you hear so many stories in the news of multiple shootings, people just innocently standing by living their life. So, I’m thankful that wasn’t one of these occurrences.”

We are still working to learn if the person who was shot was armed with weapons, along with several other questions.
