MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man who was shot by a DeSoto County deputy is now facing charges after officials say he tried to run the deputy over.

This shooting happened at Bethel Road near 178 at a car wash in Olive Branch at around 2:30 p.m.

Workers in the area were on high alert as detectives investigated the county’s second officer-involved shooting in 24 hours.

“It was just a whole lot of crime scene tape,  police officers’ ambulances coming into the driveway..everything was blocked off,” said Chunitta Tunstall who works in Olive Branch.

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were at the car wash conducting a sting operation and looking for sexual predators.

26-year-old Darielle Davonte Sparks of Marion, Arkansas was the target of the operation.

Police said Sparks was running a human trafficking operation and witnesses tell us there was a woman in the car with him when he tried to run over a deputy in a black Mercedes.

“This is obviously a violent person who tried to kill one of our deputies with a vehicle today so he’s lucky to be alive himself,” said DeSoto County Deputy Chief Justin Smith.

WREG saw at least four evidence markers and two bullet holes in the windshield of the Mercedez at the scene.

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office said no deputies were injured but Sparks was hit in the shoulder.

The sheriff’s department said Sparks was in custody at the hospital. He was later charged with aggravated assault with a weapon.

Sparks is being held on a $250,000 bond.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is now reviewing three officer-involved shootings in DeSoto County.

This shooting would mark the second officer-involved shooting in DeSoto County in the last 24 hours. Wednesday night, a deputy reportedly shot an armed suspect during a traffic stop in Horn Lake.

The suspect in the Horn Lake shooting is expected to be okay.

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department said the officer involved in the Horn Lake shooting has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

A woman was also shot and killed by officers after a police chase in Horn Lake about four weeks ago.

DCSO said the deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Only one deputy was involved in the shooting but several deputies that were on the scene are considered witnesses.
