MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 16-year-old was taken to the hospital after shots were fired into a South Memphis home overnight.
According to the Memphis Fire Department, the shooting happened around 1 a.m. Thursday on Barton Street.
The teen boy was shot in the toe after a bullet went through a wall. He was transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and is expected to be okay.
The victim’s grandmother, who didn’t want to be identified, said gunmen fired more than 20 rounds into her grandson’s bedroom.
“When I saw the blood, I didn’t know where it was,” she said.
According to the family of the victim, he was targeted. Neighbors told WREG they saw at least six suspects firing multiple shots into the home.
There were three other children at the residence, according to the grandmother.
She says four years ago her daughter — the victim’s mother — was killed while crossing the street.
Since then, she has taken custody of her four grandchildren, but she says it hasn’t been easy. They’ve been dealing with the grief of losing their mother, a year of homelessness, a stolen vehicle and now the shooting.
“I know they’re going through a lot, getting caught up with the wrong people. I’m trying to keep them out of that environment,” she said.
