MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man was taken into custody overnight after he allegedly pulled a gun on officers and tried to evade police by hiding in a trash can.
According to police, authorities recieved reports of someone firing shots near Claybrook and Overton Park Avenue early Tuesday morning. As they were working to pinpoint where the shots were fired, they spotted Lay Ford who reportedly became “defensive and nervous” when officers tried to speak with him.
After asking him to show his hands, detectives say the 59-year-old pulled a gun on the officers, forcing them to take cover. Ford took off but was eventually tracked down to a trash can about half a mile away by a police K9.
He was taken into custody and transported to the hospital due to shortness of breath. He was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Investigators said they are still trying to determine who fired the early morning shots.
