(Memphis) Memphis police are trying to identify the man killed in a hit and run on Winchester road, late Wednesday night.

When police arrived on the scene they found a man lying face down.

He appeared to be dead. The driver who apparently hit him was nowhere in sight.

“When I came out the body was laying right there on the sidewalk,” said Shemiah Stokes, who was one of the first to arrive after the accident.

“I could see the man lying face down, just like that on the side walk,” said Stokes. “He wasn't moving. I knew he was dead.”

LaTonie Mason added, “They said half of his face and both of his legs were gone.”

Neither Mason nor Stokes knows the man who was killed late Wednesday night. Apparently, police don't either and don't have a way to identify him.

The driver in the accident, according to investigators, took off before officers arrived.

“I think that's evil for someone to do something like that and knowing that that's somebody's son,” said Mason. “I think it's very evil.”

The couple hopes the victim, whoever he may be, can get justice.

“Its a criminal act,” said Stokes. “Come on now, that's somebody's family member. I've got family too and I wouldn't want nobody to so my family like that and you wouldn't either.”

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 901.528.CASH.
