JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi State Department of Health has confirmed the states’ first case of the flu.
While the patient is from Central Mississippi, the Health Department said this serves as a good reminder to act now.
“This not only indicates that flu is present in the state, but it also serves as a reminder that now is the time to get your flu shot if you haven’t done so already,” said MSDH State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers. “The flu shot takes one to two weeks to produce immunity, and flu season usually peaks in January through March in Mississippi.”
The flu is nothing to take lightly as each year more than 200,000 Americans are hospitalized for flu symptoms. An estimated 3,000 to 49,000 people die.
