(Memphis) An East Memphis family is lucky to be alive after managing to escape their burning home early Monday.

The fire started around 2:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of Willey St. — which is just north of the I-240/State Route 385 interchange.

It took firefighters more than 90 minutes to bring the flames under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but firefighters believe the fire started in the carport area.

One of the houses next door also sustained fire damage to its exterior.

The family is now being assisted by the American Red Cross.
