MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A driver who struck a house in Fox Meadows before dawn Saturday had been shot, police said.

Police found the victim unresponsive at 3:35 a.m. at a house in the 2800 block of Emmet. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities identified the man on Sunday as 33-year-old Eliceo Meindez. They said he had been shot prior to hitting the house.

The impact of the crash woke up a man who was asleep in the house next to his mother and 9-year-old brother.

“It sounded literally like a loud boom,” said the man, who didn’t want to be identified. “I kept thinking I was dreaming.”

He woke up his mother after hearing the noise, but what actually made him go outside was a ring at the doorbell from the family’s neighbor, who had just gotten home and saw the car.

The family said the car had at least two bullet holes in it.

Initially, they thought the man inside was okay until they went to the car window, knocked on it several times and didn’t receive a response. That’s when they say they knew something was wrong.

They say Meindez was lying across his passenger seat with his wallet, raising questions of whether he was robbed or targeted. The family believes he may have taken his last breaths in their driveway.

“I was like, shocked,” said the resident. “There was a guy dead in front of the house where I sleep at, where I lay my head at.”

The damage to the house was minimal, but the family inside said it could’ve been a lot worse.

The family says they’re counting their blessings and praying for the victim’s family.
