SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A 45-year-old was arrested on Sunday after allegedly causing a crash that sent three teenagers to the hospital.
Shelby County deputies arrested Christopher Thomas on multiple charges including DUI.
They said he was traveling down Highway 385 near Hacks Cross when he hit another vehicle with three teens inside. The teens were reportedly stopped on the side of the road after one of them fell ill.
One of them was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The other two were transported in non-critical condition.
The morning after a horrific accident, pieces of debris still litter the side of the highway.
“It was a terrible crash. Again these were three teenagers, who had pulled over on the side of the road because one had become ill,” says Lt. Anthony Buckner with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department. “This is when this vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, weaving to my understanding in and out of traffic slammed into the car. It was a very chaotic scene.”
Police say 45-year-old Christopher Thomas plowed into the car of teenagers.
“These teens were seriously injured. One was in critical condition, two others were non critical, but they also sustained serious injuries,” says Buckner.
Deputies say Christopher Thomas remained on the scene after the accident. But when officers got here, they say it was clear what they were dealing with.”
“When deputies arrived on the scene and they spoke with Christopher Thomas, they could immediately identify the presence of alcohol,” says Buckner.
Christopher Thomas was arrested and slapped with multiple charges including Aggravated Assault, DUI, Public Intoxication, speeding and improper passing.
The car the teens were in was almost unrecognizable.
Just days from Christmas, deputies say people will be celebrating, but they remind you that alcohol and driving do not mix.
“We are encouraging anyone who is planning on drinking to have a plan. Identify a designated driver, take advantage of some of the ride sharing services that are out there,” says Buckner. ” It’s simple, if you drink and you drive you are gonna be arrested and you are gonna go to jail. It’s just that simple. “
