DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. —  A deputy with the Desoto County Sheriff’s Office has resigned from his position just days after he was arrested for allegedly driving drunk.

Lt. Steve Palmer with the department told WREG Blake Channell was arrested Jan. 31 on Interstate 59 in Forrest County near Hattiesburg. He was charged with DUI and obstructing a roadway.

The 28-year-old resigned the very next day. Channel didn’t hit anyone and was off-duty at the time of his arrest.

That’s a key detail for DeSoto County resident Robert Jackson.

“I see him just like a regular citizen,” he said.

Jackson also says he may have thought differently if the former-deputy was on-duty.

“Him being on duty, I see him different. He’s making a judgment on us out here. In other words, he could pull me over for some infraction and he ain’t even qualified to pull me over, because he’s impaired.”

“Nobody’s perfect, and I feel like all of us make mistakes,” another DeSoto County resident said.

But she and Jackson both think Channel should face any potential punishment the court gives him.

The sheriff’s department said Channell had been employed by them for less than a year when he resigned.
