Crime Stoppers tip leads to arrest of suspected arsonist

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man accused of setting fire to a North Memphis market and home has been charged with arson.

The Memphis Fire Department said the arrest of 36-year-old Bashir Albarati was the result of a Crime Stoppers tip.

MFD responded to a fire located at Geno’s Market on the 1700 block of Hunter Avenue on at 6:27 a.m. Aug. 3. The front of the building is a market while the rear is a home.

MFD say the could see a visible fire from the wood-frame commercial building. It did not have sprinklers.

A news release states the building and two vehicles sustained an estimated $10,000 in smoke, fire and water damage.

MFD determined it was started intentionally set to a vehicle near the carport area.
