MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say 23 year old Cassandra Carter stole $14,243 from the Walmart on Raleigh Lagrange Road in Northeast Memphis. She’s accused of pocketing money from the register over and over.

Police say the store’s loss prevention officer got suspicious after Carter’s register came up short in funds a number of times in recent weeks. Investigators say he then caught her on surveillance video stuffing cash from the register into her pocket or into a bag, sometimes while she pretended to throw something away.

Police say Carter admitted to stealing the money and told officers she needed it to buy a car, turn her utilities on, and buy things for her children.

“You know, stealing is stealing,” customer Malcolm Green says.

He empathizes with her but isn’t giving her a pass.

“I can understand that situations get dark and you act out of those frustrations but it ain’t right,” he says.

Customer Eboni Pringle feels the same way.

“I would have rather you sit on the corner with your kids and ask for money,” she says.

Carter was arrested yesterday and bonded out of jail today. So, we went to the address she gave police but no one answered the door. We also called the number she gave police but we couldn’t even leave a message because the mailbox was full.

Customer Linda McFarlane calls the whole thing a shame.

“I feel bad for the kids because see, now Mama got herself in a deeper situation,” she says.

Carter is charged with theft and will face a judge tomorrow.

We asked Walmart for comment but we have not heard back.
