GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Patients at the Boston Baskin Cancer Foundation learned some of their personal information was stolen, and tell WREG one year of identity protection doesn’t seem like enough.

“Your life depends on records that they have. It’s not right,” Barbara Smith said.

Patients got a letter in the mail, saying a robber broke into a clinic employee’s home back in December and stole a hard drive with patient information on it. The hard drive had things like Social Security numbers, names, addresses, and birth dates.

Smith said, “It’s not fair to the patient!”

She hasn’t gotten a letter, but clinic officials say this hard drive had patient information on it stemming from 2008 until July 2014, when Smith first started going there for treatment.

Hospital officials say they have a copy of the disc that was stolen, so they know exactly what information got taken, but patients WREG spoke with say that doesn’t make them feel any better.

“He shouldn’t have been able to take the records home with him,” Smith told WREG.

Baptist Medical Center officials say the employee had clearance to take it home, but patients say they need to rethink that policy. Smith says people are coming here to get help, and while it was an accident, it’s the last thing cancer patients need to be dealing with.
